Regulation (EU) No. 2023/2842 amended the Fisheries Control Regulation (EC) No. 1224/2009. The new provisions modernise the rules in order to better achieve the objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy. The aim is to ensure greater transparency, sustainability and fairness along the entire supply chain - from catch to sale. In particular, new provisions regarding the traceability of fishery and aquaculture products will apply from 10 January 2026:
- Operators at all stages of production, processing and distribution, from catch or harvest to retail, shall ensure that traceability information is recorded for each batch of fishery or aquaculture products and made available digitally to the operator to whom the fishery or aquaculture product is supplied and, upon request, to the competent authority.
- The new traceability obligations apply not only to marine fisheries, but also to inland fisheries
- The required traceability information differs depending on the origin: different mandatory information applies to fishery products caught in the EU than to imported products.
